SAN FRANCISCO, Monday, September 12, 2016– The Department of Elections invites San Franciscans to join the poll worker team on Tuesday, November 8.

Each election, the Department of Elections recruits, trains, and assigns nearly 2,500 poll workers to assist voters in every part of the voting process at 576 polling places throughout the City.

On Election Day, each polling place is supported by a poll worker team comprised of an Inspector and three or four Clerks, including those recruited though the High School Student Poll Worker Program. Inspectors serve as supervisors for the polling locations, while Clerks assist with a variety of tasks that include checking in voters, issuing ballots, answering voters’ questions, and handing out the “I voted” stickers.

Many people serve their communities year after year: some have volunteered for more than 40 elections, making San Francisco home to some of the longest-serving poll workers in California.  Videos featuring San Francisco poll workers, their stories about serving voters, and information about volunteering can be viewed at

For one day of service, poll workers receive a stipend ranging from $142 to $195, depending on the assignment, and a custom-designed lapel pin—a little recognition for their efforts. Each pin contains the election date, helping our poll workers keep track of every election they have volunteered; some poll workers display and wear pins on a lanyard showing their efforts serving the community.

Anyone who is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident is invited to apply to be a poll worker at the Department’s Recruitment Office. The office is open every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 8:30 4 p.m., and is located in City Hall, Room 43 B.

The Department of Elections thanks the many volunteers who have already committed to help us conduct the upcoming election on November 8. We encourage other community members to join the City’s poll worker team to ensure support and assistance for all voters at all neighborhood polling places.
