The Department of Elections Provides its November 8 Election Results Reporting Schedule
Department of Elections
City and County of San Francisco
John Arntz, Director
For Immediate Release
SAN FRANCISCO, Wednesday, November 2, 2022 – The Department of Elections will report preliminary and final election results for the November 8, 2022 Consolidated General Election as follows:
Election Night Preliminary Results Reporting
All of the election results reports released on Election Night will be preliminary and will change in the following days as the Department counts several tens of thousands of ballots received on Election Day. Beginning Wednesday, November 9, the Department will post the approximate number of ballots left to count on its website and will update that number daily.
After the polls close, the Department will issue four preliminary results reports. The first report, announcing results from most vote-by-mail ballots received before Election Day, will be issued at approximately 8:45 p.m. The second and third reports, incorporating Election Day polling place results, will be issued at approximately 9:45 p.m. and 10:45 p.m., respectively. The fourth report, with all Election Day polling place results, will be issued as soon as all 514 precincts have reported.
On Election Night, all results reports will be available at sfelections.sfgov.org/november-8-2022-election-results-summary. Hard copies of the results summary and ranked-choice voting reports will be available in Room 48 of City Hall as well as in the North Light Court of City Hall, where Director John Arntz will be available to respond to questions from the media and members of the public. Results will also be available via the ticker on SFGTV, Channel 26.
The Department will announce the issuance of preliminary results reports via twitter.com/sfelections and facebook.com/sfelections.
Canvass Period Results Reporting
After Election Day, the Department will still need to count many ballots, including provisional ballots cast on Election Day, vote-by-mail ballots received on Election Day, and vote-by-mail ballots received within one week of Election Day and postmarked by Election Day.
The Department will issue the next preliminary results reports at 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 10.
No results reports will be issued on Wednesday, November 9. The reason is the Department will halt the processing of vote-by-mail ballots at 3 p.m. on Monday, November 7 to facilitate in-person voting at polling places. This halt in processing vote-by-mail ballots allows in-person voters to cast a regular ballot to be tabulated at a polling place, rather than having to vote a provisional ballot. The Department will resume the processing and counting of ballots on Wednesday afternoon, after rosters have been scanned and in-person voting histories have been uploaded into the Election Information Management System.
Every day on which election personnel count ballots, the Department will release updated results reports at approximately 4 p.m. and Director John Arntz will be present for questions outside of Room 48 in City Hall. (On days the Department does not count ballots, the Department will post a notice on its website to that effect.)
Final Election Results Reporting
The Department will release final election results on its website, via a press release, and via social media no later than December 8, 2022, which will mark the end of the canvass period.
Results Reporting Formats
All elections results reports will be available at sfelections.sfgov.org/november-8-2022-election-results-summary. The first tab on this page includes election results summary, as well as turnout, registration, and contest-specific information. The second tab provides detailed reports, including the Statement of the Vote, which lists results data by precinct, district, and neighborhood, the ranked-choice voting reports (in PDF and Excel), and the Cast Vote Record, which contains raw data of votes cast in the election (in JSON). The third tab provides information on the number of ballots left to count. The fourth tab provides a link to access the Secretary of State’s website to view statewide results.
