Department of Elections Is Seeking Poll Workers for the June 5 Election

SAN FRANCISCO, Friday, April 6, 2018–The Department of Elections is reaching out to San Franciscans to volunteer as poll workers for the June 5 election.  People can apply to be poll workers at the Department of Elections in City Hall, Room 48.  

On Election Day, each polling place is supported by a poll worker team comprised of an inspector and three or four clerks, including some recruited though the High School Student Poll Worker Program. Inspectors serve as supervisors for the sites, while clerks assist with a variety of tasks including: checking in voters, issuing ballots, answering voters’ questions, and handing out the “I Voted” stickers.

For one day of service, poll workers receive a stipend ranging from $142 to $195, depending on the assignment, as well as a custom-designed lapel pin—a little recognition for their efforts. Each pin features the election date, helping our poll workers keep track of every election for which they have volunteered.

To be a poll worker, you must be:

  • at least 18 years old (unless you participate in the High School Student Poll Worker Program)
  • a resident of California
  • a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident

People fluent in Chinese, Spanish, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, or other languages, in addition to English are encouraged to apply, as they provide vital assistance to San Francisco’s diverse electorate on Election Day. 

The Department of Elections thanks the many volunteers who have already joined the City’s poll worker team to provide support and assistance for all voters at all neighborhood polling places.
