SAN FRANCISCO, Wednesday, May 16, 2018– The Department of Elections reminds San Franciscans that the May 21 deadline to register to vote or to update registration information for the June 5 election is quickly approaching. Those who are not sure if they are registered to vote or whether their registration information is current are advised to check their registration at

Mailed registration cards must be postmarked on or before May 21. Those who prefer to register online at have until midnight on May 21.

Conditional Voter Registration
Eligible residents who miss the May 21 registration deadline still have the opportunity to vote in the June 5 election. Those prospective voters can register to vote and cast a provisional ballot at the City Hall Voting Center during voting hours from Tuesday, May 22, to Election Day, Tuesday, June 5.

Upon arrival at the Voting Center, the prospective voter will fill out a voter registration card (unless the person filled out an application online or brought a completed registration card with them) and a ballot application. Department  staff will process the registration and provide a ballot and a provisional envelope. After marking the ballot, the voter will place the ballot cards in the envelope, sign and seal the envelope, and drop the envelope into the secure ballot return box. The envelope has a tear-off receipt with a number that the voter can use to check the status of the ballot at

Conditional Voter Registration, which became operative throughout California in 2017, is allowed only at the City Hall Voting Center. Prospective voters are still encouraged to register by May 21, so that they have more voting options: they will be eligible to request to vote by mail and they will be listed on the Roster of Voters and eligible to vote at their neighborhood polling place.

The Department’s phone bank will be open this Saturday, May 19, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., to answer any election questions in anticipation of the voter registration deadline on Monday, May 21. Telephone assistance will be available in English, Chinese, Spanish, Filipino, and other languages.

Anyone with questions about registration or voting is encouraged to call the Department of Elections at (415) 554-4375 or write to
