For Immediate Release
SAN FRANCISCO, Thursday, March 5, 2020 – The San Francisco Department of Elections (Department) issued the sixth preliminary election results report of votes cast for the March 3, 2020, Consolidated Presidential Primary Election.

Today’s report includes 60,477 votes from approximately 5,500 vote-by-mail ballots received from the United States Postal Service (USPS) during the morning of March 3, and approximately 54,500 vote-by-mail ballots that voters delivered to polling places on Election Day.

The estimated total number of remaining ballots to process is 54,000, which consists of approximately 28,000 vote-by-mail ballots and 26,000 provisional and conditional voter registration ballots.

The approximate total of uncounted ballots includes:

  1. 3,000 vote-by-mail ballots received from the USPS on Election Morning.
  2. 2,800 vote-by-mail ballots returned to polling places on Election Day.
  3. 3,700 vote-by-mail ballots returned to ballot drop-off stations on Election Day.
  4. 2,700 vote-by-mail ballots cast at voting centers on Election Day.
  5. 24,000 provisional and conditional voter registration ballots cast at polling places.
  6. 1,700 conditional voter registration ballots cast at voting centers.
  7. 14,500 vote-by-mail ballots received Wednesday, March 4, from the USPS.
  8. 1,600 vote-by-mail ballots received today (March 5) from the USPS

These approximate totals are based on preliminary counts of ballots and will change as the Department processes ballots over the next several weeks. The Department will issue daily updates on the number of ballots remaining for processing and counting.

The USPS delivered over 9,500 vote-by-mail ballots today, of which approximately 1,600 have postmarks dated on or before Election Day, which allows the Department to process them.  The Department will continue to process vote-by-mail ballots with valid postmarks and received from the USPS or a bona fide private mail delivery company through Friday, March 6.

Department personnel will work from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. during the next several days to review and process vote-by-mail, provisional, and conditional voter registration ballots. The Department expects to process most vote-by-mail ballots by Friday, March 6 and will likely begin reporting results this weekend from provisional and conditional voter registration ballots.

The Department will release updated results reports, including weekends, at 4 p.m. on days the Department tabulates votes and will post results reports on the Department’s website:

When releasing results, the Department also will post summary results, as well as results according to precincts, neighborhoods, and Supervisorial districts, and in multiple formats.
