San Francisco Department of Elections: Election Results Report #14 and Ballot Processing Update

SAN FRANCISCO, Friday, November 16, 2018 – Today the San Francisco Department of Elections issued the 14th preliminary election results report of votes cast for the November 6, 2018, Consolidated General Election. 

Today’s report includes results from approximately 8,000 ballots.  The Department must still process approximately 9,000 vote-by-mail and provisional ballots.

Today’s report includes votes from approximately 1,600 vote-by-mail ballots that the United States Postal Service (USPS) delivered after Election Day and that were postmarked on or before Election Day, approximately 3,500 provisional ballots, and 3,000 ballots cast at the City Hall Voting Center by conditional voter registrants.

All voters Citywide voted using four-card ballots.

The Department must still review and process vote-by-mail ballots received from the polling places on Election Day, ballots received at the City Hall Voting Center and Drop-Off Stations, vote-by-mail ballots received from the USPS after Election Day and postmarked on or before November 6 and which arrived by Friday, November 9, ballots received before Election Day requiring additional review before processing, and vote-by-mail ballots originally dropped-off in other counties.  The Department must still also review and process provisional ballots cast at polling places on Election Day.

The Department will issue preliminary results reports daily around 4 p.m.

Ballot Processing Update

The Department continues to prepare approximately 9,000 ballots for review and counting.  This total includes over 6,400 vote-by-mail ballots and approximately 2,000 provisional ballots, and approximately 500 ballots cast at the City Hall Voting Center by conditional voter registrants.  After reviewing the provisional ballots, over 5,000 are invalid and cannot be counted and this total has been removed from the ballot processing total since yesterday’s update.

The random selection of precincts for the one percent manual tally will occur Saturday, November 17, 10 a.m., in the Department’s office in City Hall room 48.  The manual tally will begin on Monday, November 19, at 8 a.m. and continue until 6 p.m. at the Department’s warehouse on Pier 48 and will proceed during work hours, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., excluding the holiday and weekends, until all chosen precincts are tallied.

The Department will broadcast the selection of precincts and post a recording of the process on sfelections.sfgov.org/observe-election-process.

Ballot processing and the canvass are open to public observation, in person, at the Department’s office in City Hall and the Department’s warehouse on Pier 48, and online, at sfelections.sfgov.org/observe-election-process.
