San Francisco Department of Elections: Preliminary Total of Uncounted Ballots for the June 5, 2018 Consolidated Statewide Direct Primary Election

Department of Elections

City and County of San Francisco

John Arntz, Director

For Immediate Release

SAN FRANCISCO, Wednesday, June 6, 2018 – The San Francisco Department of Elections must still review and then process approximately 90,000 ballots cast in the June 5, 2018 Consolidated Statewide Direct Primary Election.

This approximate total will change since the Department has yet to formally process these ballots, which will provide more accurate totals.  This means the numbers for the vote-by-mail ballots that voters returned to polling places and the number of provisional ballots cast will change.

Voters delivered approximately 44,000 vote-by-mail ballots at polling places on Election Day, and cast approximately 14,000 provisional ballots.

On Election Day, voters delivered around 3,000 vote-by-mail ballots to the Department Vote-by-Mail Drop-Off Stations located outside City Hall.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) will deliver nearly 13,000 vote-by-mail ballots today.  Most of the ballots from the post office will likely have been post marked on or before Election Day and will be processed.

The approximately 14,000 provisional ballots that voters cast at polling places will not be included in results reports until this weekend at the earliest.

The Department will continue to process vote-by-mail ballots received from the USPS that arrive by Friday, June 10, if such ballots were delivered by U.S. Mail or a delivery service, on or before Election Day, as shown by postmark, date stamp, or a voter’s dated signature.

The Department expects to process most vote-by-mail ballots by Sunday, June 10.

The Department will issue a results report today around 4 p.m.  Today’s report will include ballots received from the USPS yesterday.  The Department will need to review and process most of the remaining 90,000 ballots over the next few weeks.

The Department will continue to release results reports daily, including this weekend, at 4 p.m.
