For Immediate Release
SAN FRANCISCO, Saturday, June 9, 2018 – The Department of Elections will randomly select a minimum of six precincts for which the ballot cards will be manually tallied.  The drawing will occur on June 14, 10 a.m., in the Department’s office located in City Hall Room 48.

The Department will broadcast the selection of precincts and post a recording of the process on sfelections.sfgov.org/observe-election-process

The selection of precincts is done by using three 10-sided dice.  After the dice are thrown, the resulting number on each die is matched to an itemized list of precincts.  If the precincts selected do not include all races in the election, additional precincts will be randomly selected until all races are included for manual counting. However, for any additional precincts selected, only the contests not included on the ballots from the initial six precincts will be manually tallied.

The Department will conduct a manual tally of all ballots, including vote-by-mail and provisional ballots, cast in 1% of San Francisco’s 604 precincts, as part of the Official Canvass of the June 5, 2018, Consolidated Direct Statewide Primary Election.

The tallies from the manual count will be compared against the results reports issued from voting equipment that tallied the cards.  The purpose of conducting the manual count and then comparing those results to vote totals tabulated by voting equipment is to verify that the equipment properly tabulated ballots.

Observing the Manual Tally Process
The manual tally of selected precincts will begin on Monday, June 18, and will proceed during working hours, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., from that date until all chosen precincts are tallied.

The manual tally process will take place at the Department warehouse at Pier 48, Shed B, located on Terry Francois Boulevard, near AT&T Park.

This manual tally is open to public observation, either in person or by watching the live streaming on the Department’s website at sfelections.sfgov.org/observe-election-process
