Selection of Letters for the Local Ballot Measures to be Submitted to the Voters in the June 5, 2018, Consolidated Statewide Direct Primary Election

Department of Elections
City and County of San Francisco
John Arntz, Director

For Immediate Release
SAN FRANCISCO, Wednesday, March 7, 2018 – On Monday, March 12, at 11 a.m., the Department of Elections will select and assign a letter to identify each local measure that will appear on the ballot for the June 5, 2018, Consolidated Statewide Direct Primary Election.

The selection of letters will take place at the Department of Elections, City Hall, Room 48. To facilitate offsite public observation without having to visit the Department’s office, the Department will stream the selection of letters and post a recording of the process on sfgov.org/elections/observe-election-process.

The local measures will appear on the ballot after the state measures and the regional measure, in the following order:

  • Charter amendments
  • Ordinances
  • Declaration of policy

Local election law sets the procedure for assigning letters to local ballot measures. Since several Charter amendments and ordinances have qualified for the ballot, the Department of Elections will select the letter designation for each measure by lottery among all measures within each category. However, a limited exception to this process applies for this election. Two ordinances that concern the same subject matter will appear on the June 5 ballot. Once the first of these related ordinances is assigned a letter designation, the second related ordinance will be assigned the next letter of the alphabet and removed from the lottery.

For information about the state ballot measures that will appear on the June 5 ballot, visit the California Secretary of State’s website at sos.ca.gov/elections/ballot-measures/qualified-ballot-measures/

The Bay Area Toll Authority placed a regional measure on the ballot in the counties of San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. The resolution calling for the ballot measure specified that it would be designated as Regional Measure 3 (RM3).  As indicated above, RM3 will appear on the ballot below the state measures, above the local measures.

After selection of letters for local ballot measures, the Department will update the Local Ballot Measure Status page of sfelections.org to reflect the letter designations.
