Preliminary Election Results Report #8 and Ballot Processing Update San Francisco Department of Elections

SAN FRANCISCO, Saturday, March 7, 2020 – The San Francisco Department of Elections (Department) issued the eighth preliminary election results report of votes cast for the March 3, 2020 Consolidated Presidential Primary Election.

Today’s report includes 9,478 votes consisting of results from vote-by-mail and provisional ballots.  The Department has processed most vote-by-mail ballots and a few hundred remain for counting.  The provisional ballots included in today’s results report were cast in Supervisorial Districts 1, 2, and 3.  More provisional ballots from these three Supervisorial Districts remain for review and processing.

Yesterday, the Department identified approximately 200 vote-by-mail ballots during the canvass for processing and received approximately 200 vote-by-mail ballots from other counties that these counties received on Election Day.  The Department continues its initial review of provisional and conditional voter registration ballots and the approximate number of these categories of ballots that the Department received on Election Day is 33,000.

The estimated total number of remaining ballots to process is 27,500, which consists of approximately 500 vote-by-mail ballots and 27,000 provisional and conditional voter registration ballots.

The Department will close on Sunday, March 8, and will next tabulate ballots and report results on Monday, March 9.

These approximate totals are based on preliminary counts of ballots and will change as the Department processes ballots over the next several weeks. The Department will issue daily updates on the number of ballots remaining for processing and counting. 

Department personnel will work until 8 p.m. today, Saturday, March 7.  The Department will close on Sunday, March 8, and will resume ballot processing on Monday, March 9.  On Monday, Department personnel will process ballots from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Department will release updated results reports at 4 p.m. on days the Department tabulates votes and will post results reports on the Department’s website:

When releasing results, the Department also will post summary results, as well as results according to precincts, neighborhoods, and Supervisorial districts, and in multiple formats.
