San Francisco Department of Elections: Election Results Report #5 and Ballot Processing Update

SAN FRANCISCO, Wednesday, November 7, 2018 – The San Francisco Department of Elections issued the fifth preliminary election results report of votes cast for the November 6, 2018, Consolidated General Election. 

Today’s report includes over 14,000 of the approximately 139,000 vote-by-mail and provisional ballots that the Department received from the United States Postal Service (USPS) and voters on or immediately prior to Election Day.   

In today’s results report are votes from approximately 6,000 vote-by-mail ballots received from the USPS on Election Day, approximately 5,000 vote-by-mail ballots received from the USPS on the Monday before Election Day, as well as over 3,000 ballots cast at the City Hall Voting Center on the Saturday, Sunday, and Monday before Election Day. 

All voters Citywide voted using four-card ballots.

The Department must still review and process vote-by-mail ballots received from the polling places on Election Day, cast at the City Hall Voting Center, and received at the City Hall drop-off stations, and vote-by-mail ballots received from the USPS after Election Day and postmarked on or before November 6 and which arrive by Friday, November 9.  The Department must still also review and process the provisional ballots cast at polling places on Election Day.

The Department will issue preliminary results reports daily around 4 p.m.

Ballot Processing Update
The Department continues to review approximately 125,000 ballots for processing.  This total includes approximately 99,000 vote-by-mail ballots and an estimated 26,000 provisional ballots.  As the Department processes the vote-by-mail and provisional ballots the totals for these categories of ballots will change as more accurate counts are obtained.

The Department received 18,000 vote-by-mail ballots from the USPS on Election Day.  Today, the Department received nearly 20,000 vote-by-mail ballots from the USPS, most of which were postmarked on or before Election Day and will be processed.

Voters delivered approximately 57,000 ballots to polling places on Election Day and those ballots remain to be processed.

Voters also cast nearly 26,000 provisional ballots on Election Day that will require several days of review before being processed for counting. 

The remaining unprocessed ballots consist of approximately 4,200 vote-by-mail ballots that voters delivered to City Hall Drop-Off Stations on Election Day as well as approximately 5,000 ballots cast at the City Hall Voting Center. 

The Department will continue to process vote-by-mail ballots received from the USPS that arrive by Friday, November 9, if such ballots were delivered by the USPS or a delivery service, on or before Election Day, as shown by postmark, date stamp, or a voter’s dated signature. 

The Department expects to continue reviewing and processing vote-by-mail ballots through early next week.  The initial review of provisional ballots will begin Thursday, November 8, and will continue for several more days.  The counting of provisional ballots will begin after the vote-by-mail ballots are reviewed.
