SAN FRANCISCO, Friday, October 21, 2016 –The Department of Elections will begin opening and processing accepted vote-by-mail ballots on Tuesday, October 25.
As vote-by-mail ballots are returned, staff members process them by scanning the envelopes through a mail sorter that records receipt of each ballot, captures the voter’s signature on the envelope for Department personnel review, and sorts the envelopes by voting precinct.

SAN FRANCISCO, Thursday, October 20, 2016 –The Department of Elections requests that, before inserting their vote-by-mail ballots into the return envelope, San Francisco voters fold each ballot card separately, as shown in this video.
This small step makes the return envelope flatter and streamlines the processing of these four- or five-card ballots.

SAN FRANCISCO, Tuesday, October 18, 2016 – Since the City Hall Voting Center opened on Tuesday, October 11, over 700 voters have cast their vote in the November 8 election. The Department of Elections has also received approximately 11,500 of the nearly 300,000 ballots that were mailed to voters.
